Having some great picnic ideas up your sleeve, can change your day from the normal routine into...

  • A romantic haven filled with love
  • A magical adventure for your kids to enjoy
  • An easy way to introduce new foods for all
  • A good excuse to celebrate the Summer months!

I love it!

My kids love it! (We also don't let the weather bother us!)

So yes we have picnic'd when there has been snow on the ground!

So here's how we do it...

Firstly, there are a few key elements to make your picnic ideas become reality...

Once you have these things decided you are truly in for a great day.

Before we look at the list for each of these, you should check out your local weather.  This way you can amend your plans to picnic inside, should you need...

PICNIC IDEAS: planning

So you would like to plan a picnic, but you don't know where to start? This mini-checklist will help you through this...

  1. When do you want the picnic
  2. Where do you want to have the picnic?
  3. What equipment do you have?
  4. Any alternative guests?

So why are you considering a picnic? Here are some ideas to get you going...

Birthday party

A day out with friends

A day by the river

Fishing Trip

For the beach

To help fussy eaters

To dine at a meaningful spot

To celebrate a special event

To propose marriage

A day trip out

Visiting relations

Just because you like to picnic!

We'd love to hear from you if you have other suggestions for this list, why not drop me a line?

The equipment for a picnic can be just a sandwich box and an old newspaper to sit on, or you can go for it and aim for the beautiful wicker hamper... the choice as they say is yours!

If you are catering for more than just yourself, then you may want to run your eyes over this checklist...

  • Ready equipped hamper's - check that you have the right number of place settings for your diners
  • Something to sit on - specialist picnic blankets that are waterproofed on one side can be a great investment if this is a regular activity for you
  • If you are making up a kit yourself, don't forget you'll need crockery and cutlery
  • Food containers, you'll likely need varying sizes
  • Something to drink, whether this is tea, coffee or something a little stronger, you may wish to invest in a flask that will keep the temperature of the fluids within
  • Napkins! Completely versatile, and to my way of thinking an essential to any good picnic

With this equipment, you are all set to go, you just need to add food and diners!

Having all the equipment and no place to go, is not ideal!

Now you've planned your picnic, you can then start selecting your foods.

Here I have put together some of my own and my families favorite items.

You can add to this listing to suit your situation...

  1. Quiche
  2. Pasties
  3. Scotch Eggs
  4. Pizza
  5. Chicken Nuggets
  6. Sausage Rolls
  7. Cocktail Sausages

  1. Sandwiches
  2. Prawns
  3. Cucumber sticks
  4. Carrot sticks
  5. Cherry tomatoes
  6. Celery
  7. French Stick / Baguette
  8. Butter
  9. Lettuce

  1. Small cheeses
  2. Exotic Meats
  3. Pork Pies
  4. Cheese crackers
  5. Crisps
  6. Drinks

Paying attention to the dates on your food. How long they have been out in the open? Keep a check as you don't want to ruin or shorten your picnic, because someone has been taken ill!

Depending on why you are out having a picnic, you can inspire young children to take part by bringing their Teddy Bears, but you can also have some good games whilst benefitting from all the fresh air!

Here you'll find a list of some of the common family games that I have played at many a picnic as a child, and now actively do with my own children.

  • Football
  • Rugby
  • Rounders
  • Baseball
  • Non-stop Cricket
  • Kite Flying
  • Frisbee
  • Treasure Hunt
  • Scavenger Hunt
  • Three-Legged Races
  • Easter Egg Hunt
  • Badminton

One last thing to say, is regarding the weather.

Should it all turn foul on you, don't worry!

You can have just as much fun, by bringing your picnic inside!

With full and wild use of your imagination you can have rivers, rock pools, football grounds or anything by your side.

Yes this is one of the best times to involve the teddies too... with just a few cushions as suitable "rocks", you really can re-live some of your childhood. Your kids won't think your mad, honest!
