The back to school supplies list for Juniors sounds like it shouldn't be that bad, right?
I mean, quite likely the child is attending the same school. So you just need to re-stock on uniform, yes?
...Well, do check, you may find that Polo Shirts have to be replaced with regular shirts. You may also find that additional sports are introduced, which may need a more extensive PE kit.
Or perhaps, like for our school, Year 6 students were expected to be wearing a blazer.
So once again, I head to the school's Website, and download a prospectus.
From here I cross check the child's age with the uniform requirements and then make a note of what has changed.
As far as timeline's go, I usually order (or re-order) school uniform in June.
Partly this is due to our family budget. Partly this is to make sure that the uniform is here, in my hands, before the long summer holidays begin. Have you seen the social media uproar that starts mid-August, asking if uniform from X supplier has been received... everyone wants their child to have everything for term starting in September.
So in preparation for ordering, I use the May half term holiday, to wash and collect all of the uniform back together. This usually involves gutting under the children's beds, and looking in peculiar places to find the missing school sock or two!
Once washed and dried I check the following...
If any are frayed, or starting to fray, or have holes in, then I will note to replace them.
Next to check, is the uniform list for the coming year.
Add any items that are unique for Juniors to the shopping list.
Add any routine items like...
You list is then set for your ordering/shopping day.
So this is a good time of year to re-evaluate what is in the Homework Box.
I basically gut the box. Then salvage what I can...
I've also purchased some board games that are good for the children to play (and subconsciously) learn. The sort of games that I have bought are as follows...
I've found that this is not only educational, the children don't realize they are consolidating their learning. Talk about a parenting win!
The icing on the cake? It's also quality family time.
